Well-Organized My Desk

My favorite space in the world where I can feel the most comfortable is my desk.
It shows my numerous thoughts and my history: what I did in the past, what I am doing at present, and what I will do in the future.
On the other hand, my wife doesn’t want to go to my desk. As always, whenever she needs me, she just calls me in front of my room door, instead of coming into my room.
She says it is too messy. Early in our marriage, she tried to clean up my space, but I strongly denied for her help because this space is already organized in my way, not messy at all to me.
I feel uncomfortable and nervous if there is no my stuff in my sight. As I am a kind of greedy person, I try to keep what I want, need, and like in my sight. Also, I extremely hate somebody touch my stuff without my permission.
Many people usually think that it is right for people to clean up and organize their desk neat and tide. Once they finish one thing by using a method, they file it up or put it back in its place. Then, they usually clean up and they prepare for another project.
However, I have a different opinion about good organization. I take almost everything out and put them on my desk. I think only cleaning up and putting them back in their places are not the way of good arrangement. Whenever I need something, I can find it on my desk right away because it is in my sight. Also, all the stuffs on my desk help me think logically. Therefore, the standard of good arrangement is different from others and my desk show my way of organization.

Reflection about the Poet Visit

This visit of the poet was very surprising because I couldn’t expect his visit in our class.  Besides, when I realized that he was the poet of the three poems which I read as an assignment, I was more astonished because I expected the poems were written by each different poet.  Actually, his appearance means two different things. First, since it was my first experience to face a poet in my life, having a conversation with him was new and impressive. Second, I regret to say that I was uncomfortable with his explanation. Although his each answers for classmate’s questions were helpful to me more well understand about his works, I was sad to hear his intension because I felt as if he was saying that my comprehension was totally wrong so that my imagination was entirely broken. Sometimes knowing a guideline of the pome could bother to readers understanding in there own way.  Overall, it was very valuable time for me and I had good time.

On Writing

In writing, the most mistakes I have been pointed by native speakers are that the native speakers never say like what I wrote, when I translate in writing my thought from Korean to English, I have tried to translate every single word one by one in English. However, sometimes I encounter some expressions which don't exist in English but in Korean. So after I translate to English in my way, it sounds strange or seems not make sense of it.

I am 33 years old and still young but not too young. Since I have already learned and been used to Korean culture for 33 years, writing in English could be either crisis or chance to challenge a new world. In order to be a good writer here, I wonder if I need to translate my thought in English as well as possible or if I need to go to the Chicago library to learn English culture to communicate more smoothly as the author Annie Dillard advised. If I obtained a good skill to write in English, would it make me a new person as Yiyun Li? Once my own personal background, experience, and English skill are mixed up, would I be a good writer here as Firoozeh Dumas?

The most important thing in writing depends on why I am writing this now. It could be my own recorded expression for myself like a diary or a writing to be read by many other readers like an essay. Therefore, when I write something, I need to focus on who will read this writing. Endless possibility of writing in creation and freedom in expression are the reasons why I write.
